Our Physical Education Curriculum
Intent
Delph Primary School firmly believes that Physical Education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing valuable life skills. We teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. We also teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the fitness and wellbeing of all children at Delph Primary School, not only through the skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.
Implementation
P.E. at Delph Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming. Our P.E. curriculum is inclusive and ensures that all children, regardless of ability, can access the wide range of activities we offer.
All children will be physically active for sustained periods of time in order to encourage them to be active and healthy. Each class (Reception to Year 6) will have two P.E. sessions per week, which is equivalent to two hours. P.E. lessons are based on the National Curriculum and are carefully planned to ensure progression. This includes mastering basic movements which can be applied to a range of activities, developing strength and endurance, improving personal performance and developing simple tactics for attacking and defending in team games. Specialist P.E. coaches also work alongside class teachers to deliver timetabled sessions throughout the year. All children in Key Stage 2 attend swimming lessons and all classes participate in the daily mile on non-P.E. days.
All children are given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports to help them to develop confidence, tolerance and an appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. They will develop agility, balance and co-ordination and will have opportunities to take part in competitive sports and activities within school and against other schools e.g. Saddleworth swimming league, netball and football. Children also participate in an annual ‘Sports Week’ where we give further opportunities to experience different sports, try something new and be inspired by visiting speakers.
Our P.E. curriculum will also contribute to the children’s wider areas of learning by developing their physical, social, creative, personal and cognitive skills. As part of our commitment to improving children’s mental health and well-being, children will have the opportunity to participate in the Fresh Mind Programme, which improves their knowledge and understanding of why mental well-being is important to leading a healthy lifestyle.
Children are also encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities e.g. Karate, football, orienteering and dance. Children are signposted to after school clubs and teams in the wider community so that they may continue to develop their learning and enjoyment of sports and physical activities outside of school e.g. Saddleworth Village Olympics. Sporting achievements are celebrated in weekly family assemblies.
Through the Dovestone Learning Partnership (DLP), the children are given opportunities to participate in inter-school competitions and to develop leadership skills. Children in upper KS2 help to coach our younger pupils in lunchtime and extra-curricular activities.
Impact
Our P.E. curriculum, will aim to improve the wellbeing and physical fitness of all children at Delph Primary School. All children will participate in a variety of sporting activities that are engaging, challenging and fun. Children will develop a range of skills through P.E. lessons, including learning to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, co-operation and teamwork. Through P.E. lessons, a wide range of extra-curricular activities, Robinwood, taster sessions and the success of participating in competitive sports, we prepare the children for Secondary School. We equip children with the knowledge and skills to motivate them to live happy and healthy lives and to hopefully generate a life-long love for sport and exercise.
